Puppies and Rain text
Puppies and Rain
It rained for 2 weeks with no sun up to 5.5
inches a day. Since then we have some days with sunlight and no rain, but this
is a very wet start to the dry season. I suspect the weather is being
influenced by volcanic ash. I enjoy the rain, but days without sunlight
eventually saps my energy.
Unfortunately, all the rain has not been
good for some of my vegies. And it has been too muddy to do any weeding. My
apple tree and grape plants lost their leaves with the start of “winter” here.
I will be interested to see if they re-bloom in the coming months. The little
apple tree does have buds on it.
I am 6 weeks into one 8-week class and 3
weeks into the second. I am teaching Communication and Gender and Introduction
to Oral Communication. I always enjoy the interaction with the students. I do
want to observe that I am getting more and more students who lack much
familiarity with academic expectations. So I am getting Facebook like postings
in discussions even though I have explained via the announcements what is
needed and wanted. Also, my email communications go unheeded.
I was a guest lecturer on Leslie Marmon
Silko and Laguna Pueblo for a class studying Ceremony. And I am presenting a paper on Belizean English at a
Caribbean Studies conference at the University of Belize on Monday, March 5.
That is the same week that I will be leaving for Albuquerque to dance for
Mexica NY on March 10. I may be seeing some of you while I am in Albuquerque.
Matthew and Eero are coming the weekend of
March 17, and we will celebrate James’ birthday. We will ride the Biopark train
and then go to dinner. I will let James and Eero work out dinner plans
together. On Sunday, we will ride the tram. This is Eero’s first visit to
Albuquerque that he will be able to remember.
I have added two puppies to my little
group. I thought my younger cat might enjoy playing with the puppies, but he
was a bit jealous and hostile. Actually, the female cat has been a bit more
interested. The rabbit too is having to come to grips with the two. He is
interested, but the larger one, the female, chases him. I can’t tell if he
approaches them so that they will chase him, but I really don’t want them to
learn to chase the rabbit.
I have a female shepherd-looking puppy. I
think she is what is called a “pot licker” dog here. The other is a male, quite
small. He tends to pout if he doesn’t
get his way. In terms of dogs vs. cats,
the cats are way and above more affectionate and attentive than these puppies
have been. In fact, since the puppies have arrived, the cats can’t get enough
of me. And cats have the advantage of knowing where a litter box is and always
using it. The rain hasn’t helped the house breaking. Neither wants to go out
into the rain, and the little male hates to get his feet wet. Hopefully, I can
get a pet door installed soon.
I am looking forward to visiting with
family and friends in Albuquerque during this visit.
There are new photos at this address.
Let me hear how you are doing.
Love,
George Ann
